It’s foursquare at the Library! The 2011 Summer Reading Program has begun and we want to connect smart phone users with the Library! at Hillcrest. Check-in on your smart phone, and soon you'll be checking out some great reads and maybe some great prizes, too!

According to the foursquare website, “Foursquare is a location-based mobile platform that makes cities easier to use and more interesting to explore. By ‘checking in’ via a smart phone app or SMS, users share their location with friends while collecting points and virtual badges."

In short, foursquare is a fun way for people on the go to find out about interesting places nearby. People on foursquare can leave reviews and helpful suggestions about the places they visit. Those who “check-in” to a location most often can earn rewards, prizes, and even become "Mayor" for that location.

As part of the 2011 Summer Reading Program, the Library! at Hillcrest wants to encourage adult reading and invite people to get to know our library. We’ve been in the middle of a construction zone for the last six months - we have our sign back!

From June 1 through July 31, when you check-in to foursquare on your smart phone at the Library! at Hillcrest, you'll have the chance to win special prizes and will increase your chance of winning the Summer Reading drawing. Here are some of the fun prizes and offers you can unlock this summer!

  • Get a special one-time prize the first time you check-in to foursquare at the Library! at Hillcrest.

  • The first 3 people to check-in during our Summer Reading All-Ages Kick Off event will win a special Library-related prize. (Saturday, June 4, 1:00-3:00 p.m.)

  • Each time you check-in on your smart phone and turn in a Summer Reading Drawing Entry Form, you'll receive a special bonus entry for the prize drawing at the end of Summer Reading.

  • Plus, you'll get special surprise check-in specials just for visiting, and other specials throughout the summer!

  • But, that's not all...

The person who checks-in on foursquare most often between June 1 and July 31, AND signs up for the Adult Summer Reading Program at Hillcrest will be declared the Mayor of Summer Reading! As Mayor, you will receive your very own READ poster just like the ones below.  View the entire Boise Public Library staff READ poster gallery.

You pick the book, choose your outfit and props, and we will make the poster. You'll receive your very own copy of the poster and, subject to your approval, the poster will be featured on Boise Public Library’s website and Facebook page. Last, but not least, the Mayor will be granted a special display shelf at the library where you select your “Mayor’s Picks” from our collection for your fellow library customers.

To check in to foursquare, you'll need to download the free foursquare application (app) to a smart phone such as iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and other devices. For more information on how to get the foursquare app, visit the foursquare website, or search the app store/marketplace for your device. You will also have to sign up for a foursquare account or link your Facebook account to foursquare.

Once you have a foursquare account and app, simply visit the Library! at Hillcrest, open up the foursquare app, and find the Library! at Hillcrest - it should be on the list of nearby places.  Press the “check-in” button, and foursquare will take it from there, letting you know what prizes or offers you have unlocked.
