How Your Booksale Purchases Benefit the Library

Last year, the Friends organization raised over $130,000 to benefit the library, all through booksales and the Friends Bookstore in the library. All preparation for and staffing of the sales is provided by volunteers, who typically sort through about 100,000 items to prepare for a sale. To-date, the Friends group has donated $387,000 to the library to purchase opening-day collections for the new Collister and Hillcrest branch libraries.

The Friends of the Boise Public Library is a nonprofit volunteer organization founded to promote the interest and welfare of the library.

General Booksale Information

Books being sortedThe Friends of Boise Public Library hold two very successful annual booksales to benefit the library.

  • Both sales are three-day events, normally a Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • On the Thursday evening before the public sale, a preview sale is offered for Friends members.
  • Sunday is always half-price day.

  • All sales are coordinated and staffed by volunteers, and all proceeds benefit Boise Public Library.

The Friends also have a regular ongoing booksale and a bookstore at the main library.

Spring Sale

The spring sale is usually held the first weekend of April.  It traditionally includes the option of a special price for books-by-the-bag, and is held in the warehouse behind the downtown library between 8th and 9th Streets. The 2010 spring sale is scheduled for April 9, 10 & 11.

Fall Sale

The fall sale is usually held the last weekend of October in the Main Library's Hayes Auditorium.  This sale stocks better-quality books for gift giving. The 2009 Fall Sale was held on Friday-Sunday, October 28-31, in the library's Hayes Auditorium.

Sale Inventory

While sale inventory varies, it usually includes pocket & trade paperback books from all genres, sets of books, computer books & software, classics, kids books, coffee table books, cookbooks, retired library hardback best sellers and Oprah book club selections, as well as limited videos and music.
