Friends of the Library
Activities Friends make contributions of books and materials to aid in developing the library collection; they give gifts of money for the advancement of library services; and they give other gifts as the library has need. Friends also promote the interest and welfare of the library and encourage all citizens to use the services the library offers. They work to make the community familiar with the many services Boise Public Library has to offer. Friends may also be library volunteers. Friends encourage donations of books, videos, recorded books, music and similar materials for inclusion in their book sales. Friends raise funds to benefit the library through the book sales and through memberships, from which the all-volunteer organization recruits its valued workers. Friends Book Sales and Bookstore The Friends sponsor two annual book sales. In April each year, they conduct a very successful annual Spring Book sale, around the time of National Library Week. They also conduct an annual Fall Book Sale, which includes barely-used books suitable for gift-giving. Year around, the Friends maintain a small ongoing book sale under the stairwell at the main library, and operate a bookstore on the first floor of the main library. All of these are staffed by volunteers, and all proceeds benefit the library. Philosophy Friends support the idea that a library is a most valuable community asset that needs nourishment and support above its set budget. They believe in the value of books and reading; they regard a library as an impartial, reliable information center, they look upon it as a dynamic agency for the education of both youth and adults. Becoming a Friend If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the Library, print off the membership form, complete and mail it to the address shown on the form. Or, call 384-4238.
