Researching Science Projects - Boise Public Library
Science Projects Resources

Websites  (See also Research Tips and Library Materials below)

Most of the annotations for these sites were provided by the Librarians' Internet Index http://lii.org.  Copyright © 2008 by Librarians' Internet Index, LII. All rights reserved.

All Science Fair Projects  http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/ednote1.html
An easy to use site because it allows you to sort by broad subject areas (biology, chemistry, earth science, etc) as well as by grade or level of difficulty.  There are obvious links to related commercial products but this doesn't seem to diminish the usefulness of the information available.

The Math Forum    http://mathforum.com/
Information of interest to mathematicians, math teachers, parents, and students studying geometry and other branches of math. Math resources broken down by grade level and type of math. There's a great page (hidden in the teacher's section): Math Ideas for Science Fair Projects. And, don't miss Ask Dr. Math, an excellent place to ask all those K-12 math questions. It has a searchable archive and FAQ that includes all the classic problems.

School Science Fairs Homepage    http://www.cdli.ca/sciencefairs/
If you are stuck trying to think of a good project idea this is the page for you.  The Eastern Newfoundland Science Fairs Council has created lists of science project ideas that are arranged by both age and science topic (physics, biology, etc).

Science Fair Central     http://school.discovery.com/sciencefaircentral/
Just one of several sections of DiscoverSchool.com.  Currently they are spotlighting the science author Janice Van Cleave.  Expect to find the in's and out's of preparing a science fair project, a 300+ question database, ideas for projects and similar type content.  grr/bpl

Science Fair Project Index    http://www.ascpl.lib.oh.us/scifair/
An index of experiments and projects in all areas of science and many areas of technology from books published in 1990 and later. The primary users are grades K-8 although there are some books intended for older users. It is searchable by general topic, keywords in the experiment, title and other bibliographic information, and grade level. Earlier editions were published in print format. From the Akron-Summit County (OH) Public Library.

Science Fair Project Resource Guide  http://www.ipl.org/youth/projectguide/
Another good resource for young people from the Internet Public Library. There is an annotated list of sites on how to do a science fair project, samples of completed projects, ideas for projects and general science resources.

The Science Page    http://www.sciencepage.org
Maintained by Murray Hill, this is a page of science links, rather than actual information.  There are 24 categories to choose from, including biology, chemistry, earth science, science fair projects, weather, space and more.  grr/bpl

State Science Fair   http://www.usc.edu/CSSF/
Lots of resources about and for science fair projects, general and by subject, links to other science fairs sites, history of previous science fairs, and more. Searchable. The final science fair of the academic year for students throughout the State of California in grades 7 - 12. Includes the results for the 47th annual California State Science Fair, held on May 18-19, 1998.

General Research Tips

  • Online Catalog: Perform a subject search in the Library's online catalog and use the search term "science projects". You will find materials listed under that subject and it's subcategories, such as:

science projects
science projects -- handbooks, manual, etc.

Or you will also find suggestions for other subjects you may want to select listed like this:

See Also: Astronomy projects
See Also: Natural history projects
See Also: Physics projects

If you see the term "juvenile literature" after a subject this means it is a nonfiction book that will be found in the Youth Services area.

  • Magazine and Journal Articles Online: Using the same search terms you can also search our eCollections, which include ebooks, databases and websites. Go to our Databases & Website page to get started.  You will find many full text articles using these resources.
