(August 30, 2011)  Mayor David Bieter today proclaimed September to be Library Card Sign-up Month in Boise again this year to encourage students throughout the valley to make use of the many resources offered by our local libraries. The ceremony and proclamation signing took place at Whitney Elementary School off West Overland at 2:00 p.m., with help from the school's afternoon kindergarten classes. 

“Library cards are an essential school supply,” said Boise Public Library Director Kevin Booe. “Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. With school back in session, it makes sense to encourage students to have a library card.”

A library card makes it easy for students to get homework help, to do research for a paper or to find a book for the next book report. Plus, they can ask librarians to help them find and evaluate information, and can use library computers for word processing and online research.

“With education budgets and resources around the country being cut, it’s important for students and parents to be reminded of the tremendous education resources available for free at our libraries,” said Mayor Bieter. “I encourage every student who doesn’t have a library card to sign up for one today.”

WHEREAS, The library card is the most important school supply of all; and

WHEREAS, Children who use the library perform better in school because libraries enhance the educational experience by opening a world of possibilities; and

WHEREAS, Libraries in Boise meet the needs of all types of students by providing free access to computers, books, DVDs and CDs, online educational resources, librarian assistance and homework help; and

WHEREAS, Libraries provide programs, activities and resources to the communities they serve, stimulating an interest in reading and inspiring life-long learning; and

WHEREAS, A library card is the “Smartest Card” you can own and everyone should have one;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVID H. BIETER, Mayor of the City of Boise, do hereby proclaim the month of September, 2011 to be LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH in the City of Boise.
