Summary

Located on the southwest corner of North Cole and Ustick Road, the West Boise branch library will act as a community center, welcoming and integrating the neighborhood and surrounding businesses.  The full-service library will provide a welcoming, light-filled environment, with computer and Internet access, lots of books, movies and music, spaces for study, meetings and relaxing, and special programs for all ages. 

  • Anticipated grand opening:  June 2009

Public Service Features

  • 15,300 square feet of public space
  • 40,000-50,000 books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, movies, music
  • 50 public computers with 46 Internet-access stations
  • Wireless access
  • Comfortable chairs for relaxing, as well as table seating
  • Open 6 days a week, totaling 50 hours
  • Self-service checkout
  • Coffee & other hot beverages
  • Copy center
  • Library programs for all ages, including:
    • Baby, preschool & toddler storytimes
    • Afterschool & teen programs
    • Computer classes for adults
    • Book clubs & other special programs

Public Art

Glass artist Judy Gorsuch Collins, of Denver, Colorado, was selected from a field of 26 artists responding to a national call to artists.  Gorsuch Collins was chosen because of her design versatility as an artist and the quality, sensitivity to environmental images, and site-specific nature of her past work.

  • Hearth area with fireplace for reading & socializing
  • Group study room, seating four
  • Fun, specially designed areas for children and teens 
  • Quiet areas with comfortable seating
  • Audio-visual equipped multi-purpose room seating 85, with external access during hours the library is closed.  Includes access to kitchen facilities and restroom.
  • Smaller audio-visual equipped meeting room, seating 12, also with external access.

Sustainable Design

  • Maximized daylighting, with a 25-foot-high glass curtain wall and a series of skylights over the main reading room
  • Sustainable features for efficient use of energy and water
  • Constructed of recycled and local materials
  • The City is targeting a gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council
  • Water-wise landscaping using drought-tolerant and native plants
  • Extensive community input into design
