Neighborhood Libraries update - West Boise
Library Director Kevin Booe welcomed almost 175 citizens to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new West Boise library, scheduled to open in late 2009. The event was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at the future library site at Cole and Ustick Roads. Mayor David Bieter, the main speaker, spoke about the world of possibilities that the future library would bring to the neighborhood. Additional speakers included David Eberle, Boise City Council President; Jerry Frank, President and CEO of PETRA, Inc., General Contractors; and Jim Thompson, President of the Library Board of Trustees. The ceremony culminated in a ceremonial groundbreaking by a cadre of 12 "honorary diggers" wielding gold-painted shovels. They also asked for a library that would act as a community center, welcoming and integrating the neighborhood and surrounding businesses. The resulting building design maximizes daylighting, with a 25-foot-high glass curtain wall as well as a series of skylights over the main reading room. The design also incorporates sustainable features for efficient use of energy and water and will use recycled and local materials. The City is aiming for a gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. West Boise Library "By the Numbers"
