WrestlemaniaThe WrestleMania Reading Challenge is designed to encourage teens and tweens to continue reading for fun beyond Teen Read Week. As an incentive, participants can compete for prizes donated by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

The program is offered through a partnership of local libraries with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and WWE, with support from Mattel.

The Reading Challenge

Tweens and teens, grades 5-12:  WWE challenges you to read 10 items in your free time between October 18, 2009, and January 19, 2010, and to keep track of what you read on a reading log

  • You may read chapter books, magazines, graphic novels, etc.
  • The items you read must not be required reading for class, and the reading must be done in your free time.
  • Turn in your completed reading logs at any Boise Public Library service desk, and receive a free WrestleMania Reading Challenge mini-poster (while supplies last).

In order to be eligible to compete for the grand prize, participants must also enter the bookmark contest.

Bookmark Contest

ribbonTeens/tweens who complete their reading log are eligible to enter the bookmark contest, which qualifies them to compete for the grand prize.  Their task is to design an original bookmark about why reading is important.

Boise Public Library will choose three first-prize winners from the bookmark designs, one for each grade group:  grades 5-6, grades 6-7, and grades 9-12.  The three winners will receive a WWE DVD and a Wrestlemania Reading Challenge Certificate.

Bookmarks will be judged on: impact of the slogan; originality of the design; relevance of the graphics/images to the slogan; and overall visual appeal.  For details, please see the entry form.

Competitions & Prizes

Regional Competition

The three winning bookmark designs from Boise Public Library participants will be entered into the Regional Reading Challenge Competition. YALSA will choose 21 regional finalists, three from each grade group for each of the seven geographic regions of the U.S.  Each finalist will receive a Regional Grand Prize of a trip to Phoenix to see WrestleMania 26, plus $2,000 for their library.

World Competition

Regional Grand Prize winners also get the chance to compete to be the WrestleMania Reading Challenge Tween World Champion (grades 5-6), Junior World Champion (grades 7-8), or Senior World Champion (grades 9-12).

In order to participate at the World Championship level, Regional Grand Prize Winners will be required to read another book, assigned by grade category.  Participants will be provided with a copy of the appropriate book. While in Phoenix, they will compete in their age category by answering questions about the book. The titles are:

  • There’s a Girl in My Hammerlock, by Jerry Spinelli (Tween: grades 5-6);

  • Saturday Night Dirt, by Will Weaver (Junior: grades 7-8);

  • Super Stock Rookie, by Will Weaver (Senior: grades 9-12).
