FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --

Teen Author Visit:  Vivian Vande Velde, April 10-12

2007 Kids Read the Same Book program

(Boise, ID – March 19, 2007)  Award-winning teen author Vivian Vande Velde will be visiting local junior highs and libraries April 10, 11 and 12. One of her books, Heir Apparent, is the teen selection for this year’s Kids Read the Same Book.

Vande Velde’s visit is sponsored by local public libraries and educators as part of the Kids Read the Same Book project.  During her three-day stay in Boise, she’ll visit six junior high and middle schools in the Boise and Meridian school districts, and attend three evening events at local public libraries.

Vande Velde is the author of over twenty books for young readers, including Heir Apparent, Companions of the Night, Being Dead, Now You See It and the Edgar Award–winning Never Trust a Dead Man.   Primarily science fiction and fantasy for young teens, the books are filled with characteristic humor and unexpected plot twists.

Author Events
Tuesday, April 10, 7 p.m., Boise: Teens Talk with Vivian Vande Velde.  A panel of teen readers will talk with Vande Velde about her writing and books.  The program is open to the public, but a section of seating will be reserved for students selected to represent their schools.  (Boise Public Library’s Hayes Auditorium)

Wednesday, April 11, 7 p.m., Boise:  Meet the Author Reception & Book Signing.  Teachers, librarians, students and the general public are invited to meet Vande Velde. (Boise Public Library’s Hayes Auditorium)

Thursday, April 12, 7 p.m., Meridian:  Teen Book Discussion with Vivian Vande Velde.  Area teens are invited to join Vande Velde and Meridian Library District’s Book Bandits Teen Book Club to discuss Heir Apparent.  (Meridian District Library Meeting Room)

More about Heir Apparent
Heir Apparent tells the story of a fourteen-year-old who learns she must win the total immersion virtual reality game she’s playing, or lose her life.  The combination of humor with futuristic, medieval, and gaming themes has made it a hit with teen readers.  Awards include ALA Best Book for Young Adults, Junior Library Guild Selection, New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age, and VOYA's Top Shelf Fiction.

Vande Velde’s visit is made possible through a Library Services and Technology Act grant, administered by the Idaho Commission for Libraries.  Kids Read the Same Book is sponsored by the public libraries of Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna and Meridian, the Ada Community Library, the Boise Education Association, the BSU Department of Literacy and the Boise School District.

The program’s goal is to promote reading for fun and to encourage a shared reading experience through discussion of the ideas and stories of one book. Visit www.idahokidsread.org or your local library for details.
