Coming August 31 - Library Comic Con!
(Boise, ID – 8/7/13) If you love comics, animation, anime or science fiction, you’ll want to attend Boise’s first Library Comic Con, a family-friendly event hosted by Boise Public Library at the end of August. Besides panel discussions, a costume contest, and comic-themed activities, you’ll get a chance to meet graphic novel and comic creators and snag some comics and original comic artwork!
Library Comic Con takes place on Saturday, August 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Main Library downtown and the adjacent Friends Warehouse. Programs and activities are scheduled in the Main Library at 715 S. Capitol Boulevard, and comics and artwork will be sold at the Artists Alley in the Friends Warehouse at 726 River Street. The free event is appropriate for all ages, and costumes are encouraged!
Guest Creators, Panel Discussions & Comics
Special guests include a variety of comic and graphic novel writers and illustrators, including Allen Gladfelter, Brian Sendelbach, Dennis Eichhorn, Eric Esquivel, Erick Freitas, Jim Sumii and Ulises Farinas. (See bios here.) At 2:00 p.m., Esquivel, Freitas and Farinas will participate in a panel discussion, Graphic Novelists Discuss Their Work, in the library’s Hayes Auditorium. Additional panels are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (The History of Comics in Idaho) and 12:00 Noon (Local Comic Writers and Artists).
Comic creators will be available for autographs and discussion in the Artists Alley, held in the Friends warehouse from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some will be selling original artwork and prints. Comics will also be sold by the Friends of the Boise Public Library and local businesses.
Costume Contest, Manga/Anime, Star Wars & More
Other activities include a Star Wars Party at 11:00 a.m., featuring a Star-Wars inspired video by local preschooler Kellan Reagan; Family Draw at 12:00 p.m., led by artists Brian Sendelbach, Albin Sendelbach and Allen Gladfelter; and a 50th anniversary Doctor Who party at 1:00 p.m.
At 3:00 p.m., winners of the costume contest and of June’s Library Comic Con Drawing Contest will be announced in the Hayes Auditorium. To enter the costume contest, participants must pose for an official entry photo between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Simplot Room on first floor.
Throughout the day, Manga/Anime fiends can swap Manga and watch YouTube anime videos and Manga drawing videos in the 1st floor Gates Room (10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Parents and younger kids can retreat to the Cartoon Zone in Youth Services to relax and watch superhero and comic cartoons (11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.).
