Outreach Services

March 14, 2020

In light of the first confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) case in Ada county, the City of Boise is taking extra steps to promote the health and safety of our community. Here are the latest program changes as this situation evolves:

Effective Monday, March 16, the Boise Public Library and the Friends of the Boise Public Library will be suspending the following services and programs system-wide:

  • Homebound Services
  • The Boise Public Library volunteer program
  • Book donations
  • Tree City Book sales at the Main Library store (online sales will continue)

Library staff and volunteers regularly take library materials to homebound persons in retirement apartments, nursing homes, and individual residences in Boise.

This service is provided without charge to residents of Boise City who are physically unable to come to a Boise Public Library facility. In addition, participants must have no other means of receiving library service (such as delivery through family members or friends). To find out whether you, a friend or family member are eligible, call 208-972-8213 to arrange a staff visit. (TDD/TTY 1-800-377-3529)

Volunteers bring materials to the home once a month and pick up the materials that are due. During the first visit, a library staff member will discuss your reading, listening and viewing preferences in order to plan future selections. Subsequent requests are made through the volunteer visitor or by calling the library.

Would You Like to be a Outreach Services Volunteer?

You may visit someone you already know who needs the service, or the Library can match you with someone in your area. Volunteers visit individual homes once a month.

Outreach Services volunteers are asked to make a six-month commitment (about twenty hours). You will pick up pre-selected materials at the library, deliver them to the homebound person, and return the items that are due. On your initial visit, you will be accompanied by a staff member and there will be a short orientation meeting.

With just a few hours of time, volunteers provide a month of enjoyment for a homebound person. Meeting new people and having a flexible schedule are added benefits. Call to schedule a visit with the Outreach Services volunteer coordinator at 208-972-8213. (TDD/TTY 1-800-377-3529)
