Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Boise Public Library is a nonprofit citizens' group that believes in the importance of books and libraries for people of every age. Friends support the growth of library service in Boise, and encourage the use of the library as a community learning, recreation, and information center.

In 1970—three years before Boise Public Library moved to its Main location—local citizens formed a nonprofit with the aim of making the library a center of learning, recreation and information. As the Friends of the Boise Public Library, we’ve been busy ever since, organizing annual book sales, running Tree City Books bookstore, selling books online and enticing our neighbors to be members of the Friends.

All proceeds raised have benefited the Library! Since 1970, we’ve raised more than $3 million for the Boise Library facilities, programs, staff education and services.

This year the Friends celebrates 50 years of service, and we join the Boise Public Library as it celebrates its 125th anniversary. Watch for Friends booths and information at Library events. Celebrate with us!

Joining the Friends

Friends members support the idea that a library is a most valuable community asset that needs nourishment and support above its set budget. They believe in the value of books and reading, regard a library as an impartial, reliable information center, and look upon it as a dynamic agency for the education of both youth and adults.

The Friends group is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that  raises funds to benefit the library through book sales and memberships. If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the Library, print and complete this membership form, and mail it to: Friends of the Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise, ID 83702.

The Friends of the Boise Public Library accepts donations of books, audiobooks, records, DVDs, CDs, software, and magazines in sellable condition to benefit the library. We cannot accept law books, damaged or deteriorating books, or sets of encyclopedias that are not in excellent condition. Some of these gifts are incorporated into the Library’s collection, while others are sold in the Friends book sales or the Friends bookstores (Main Library and Amazon). Due to COVID-19 safety protocol, we are unable to accept donations at this time.

Volunteers of the Friends staff Tree City Books at the Main Library, process books for multiple book sales, and help with other activities as needed. Call 208-972-8247 to learn more, or complete the Friends volunteer application form and return it to: Friends of the Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise, ID 83702.
