SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE: THE FRIENDS AT FIFTY

Friends50.jpg

In 1970—three years before Boise Public Library moved to its Main location—local citizens formed a nonprofit with the aim of making the library a center of learning, recreation and information. As the Friends of the Boise Public Library, we’ve been busy ever since, organizing annual book sales, running Tree City Books bookstore, selling books online and enticing our neighbors to be members of the Friends.

All proceeds raised have benefited the Library! Since 1970, we’ve raised more than $3 million for the Boise Library facilities, programs, staff education and services.

In 2020, the Friends celebrate 50 years of service, and we join the Boise Public Library as it celebrates its 125th anniversary. While this year has not unfolded as we anticipated, Friends look forward to the years ahead with renewed commitment to our mission and to this wonderful community.

COVID-19 ADJUSTMENTS AND OTHER BIG CHANGES

Due to precautions and parameters for Covid-19, the Friends have made the following changes in operations.

  • Tree City Books, located in the Main Library, remains closed. We’ll reopen as soon as we can do so safely.
  • Our two, large in-person sales, held spring and fall, are suspended until further notice.
  • New sales may be conducted on-line as auctions or on small scale as is safe for patrons and volunteers.
  • Sales and events are announced in advance to members by email and to the public on Friends of the Boise Public Library Facebook page. Follow us on Facebook!

The Friends have also relinquished our warehouse and sales space at 752 River Street. As we continue to plan for a new space, we will keep you posted.

JOIN THE FRIENDS

Friends members support the idea that a library is a most valuable community asset that needs nourishment and support above its set budget. They believe in the value of books and reading, regard a library as an impartial, reliable information center, and look upon it as a dynamic agency for the education of both youth and adults.

The Friends group is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that  raises funds to benefit the library through book sales and memberships. If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the Library, print and complete this membership form, and mail it to: Friends of the Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise, ID 83702.

DONATIONS

Unfortunately, the Friends cannot accept donations of any kind at this time. We will announce reactivation of donation acceptance and processing when we are able to do so.

VOLUNTEER

In normal times, volunteers of the Friends staff Tree City Books at the Main Library, process books for multiple book sales, and help with other activities as needed.

Because of Covid-19, our activities are minimal this year. However, we are happy to know of your interest in future volunteer activities, and we encourage you to complete the Friends volunteer application form and return it to: Friends of the Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise, ID 83702. We will contact potential volunteers as we are able to reopen our activities.
